L4D Server Browser Available! - 11/6/08
The server browser is available. Simply enable developer console by going to Options, then Keyboard/Mouse, then 'Enable Developer Console'.
After that, hit the ~ key to open up the console and type in "openserverbrowser" (no quotes). This opens up the server browser you all know and love. Right now, all games are listed under the Custom tab.
Valve heard the community and responded lightning quick! At the time of this post, you cannot join an empty server - only games already in progses. Great job Valve, thank you very much!
Also to those with servers, Dave Parker has created a 21 page PDF file with all of the settings for L4D. Thanks Dave!
Valve's Erik Johnson responded on the mailing list with the difficulties in having a 'mixed system' (matchmaking and server list):
The case that will be difficult if not impossible to deal with will be a mixed system, where you have a private "clan server" for you and a friend, and you want two other public players to come in via matchmaking.
He also added in another message:
I'm saying that your case is one we're going to solve, but having a mixed setup is more difficult.
Part of getting this demo out ahead of time was to see what kinds of concerns server administrators had, and we hear what you are all saying.
We have our hands a bit full right now, but we're all talking about what we're going to do to make running a game server something that is worth it for you.
Valve is hard at work and we're sure they'll get something figured out.
